On 29 November 1949, Sir Harold Ridley was the first to successfully implant an intraocular lens at St Thomas' Hospital in London. The first lenses were made of glass and were heavy. Plastic-based lenses were later used after it was observed that they did not cause inflammation or rejection in World War II pilots who had pieces of aircraft windshields in their eyes.
