Who is laser eye surgery recommended for?
Laser eye surgery is an ideal choice for those who want to permanently and safely get rid of wearing glasses or contact lenses. The treatment is for those who want to regain the freedom of glasses and who value natural, clear vision.
We recommend it if:
- Turned 18
- Myopia between -1 and -12 diopters
- Farsightedness between +1 and +4 diopters
- Struggling with astigmatism between +4 and -4 diopters
- There has been no change in visual acuity in the past year.
- Your eyes can no longer tolerate wearing contact lenses.
- You want to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses
When is laser eye surgery not recommended?
In some cases, laser treatment is not the right solution for safety reasons. In such cases, our doctors will recommend other, more personalized options, such as ICL implantation or lens surgery.
Most common reasons for exclusion:
- Some autoimmune diseases
- Certain wound healing problems
- Severe blurred vision
- Presence of cataracts
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding period
- Irregularly shaped cornea
- Previous herpes infection of the eye
- Severe dry eye problem
- You only wear reading glasses
If you are unsure whether you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery, a detailed suitability assessment will help you make an informed decision. If laser is not recommended, Saint James Clinic offers other safe and permanent solutions, such as: ICL artificial lens implantation.

Process
This is how laser eye surgery is done step by step
For information about each step, click on the step title.
The basis for successful laser eye surgery is a detailed, painless suitability assessment. Here, we perform all the important measurements and checks to determine exactly which procedure is the safest and most effective for you.
During the examination, we will welcome you in a discreet, relaxed environment and explain step by step what you can expect.
Period: ≈ 60–90 minutes
More information
The suitability assessment will include the following:
- Corneal mapping and thickness measurement
- Accurate determination of diopter and cylinder
- Tear film and pupil examination
- Slit lamp eye examination
- Medical consultation, detailed information
Practical information:
- Soft contact lenses should be removed 3 days and hard lenses 3 weeks before the examination.
- Blurred vision may occur for 2-3 hours after mydriasis, so we recommend that you arrive with a companion.
- Bring your previous eye test results with you, if you have them.
The purpose of the suitability assessment is to clarify every detail and allow you to make your decision with complete confidence.
On the day of your surgery, everything is about your comfort and safety. You will arrive at the Saint James Clinic at your pre-arranged time, where you will be greeted by our experienced doctors and caring team. The procedure is performed using local anesthetic eye drops, making it completely painless. The laser treatment itself only takes a few minutes, and you can go home immediately with a companion.
Period: ≈ 15–20 minutes for both eyes
More information
Steps in brief:
- Preparation, disinfection, application of eyelid speculum
- Activating the eye tracking system – the laser follows even the smallest movements
- Corneal correction with laser (a few seconds / diopter)
- Short rest and observation at the clinic
- Departure with an escort, with detailed instructions on what to do
Please note this:
- Do not use makeup, perfume, or hairspray for 2–3 days before surgery.
- Avoid alcohol consumption 24 hours before and 48 hours after the procedure.
- Bring quality sunglasses (preferably with UV protection) due to light sensitivity
- Arrange for transportation home.
The surgery is a quick and gentle procedure: you are comfortable and safe throughout, and we pay attention to every detail.
Vision improvement after laser surgery is gradual and rapid. Most patients experience a positive difference within the first few days, and full stabilization occurs within a few weeks, depending on the treatment chosen.
Period: ≈ 24-72 hours
More information
The first 24–72 hours:
- Mild tearing, stinging, or sensitivity to light may occur – this is a natural reaction.
- Rest with your eyes closed in the hours following the procedure.
- Use the prescribed eye drops exactly as prescribed.
- Do not rub your eyes.
- It is recommended to only look at a monitor or screen for short periods, taking breaks in between, supplemented with artificial tears.
Returning to daily routine after laser surgery:
- Work: for office work usually after 1 week.
- Driving: even after 1-2 days, with medical approval.
- Sport: light exercise after 1 week, swimming and sauna after about 2 weeks.
- Eye makeup: safely usually after 3 weeks.
Recovery occurs at a different pace for everyone, so medical instructions are always the guiding principle.
You won’t be alone after your laser treatment: our doctors and team will follow your recovery with regular check-ups. These appointments are short and painless, but crucial for safety and long-term results.
Period: ≈ 1-3 months
More information
Mandatory follow-ups:
- We will check the beginning of healing in the first few days.
- 1 month: We will see how your vision stabilizes.
- 3 months: Monitoring longer-term recovery.
- 6 months: Final check, confirmation of long-term results.
Follow-up:
Dry eyes, light sensitivity or mild blurring may occur temporarily, but can be managed well. The result gradually stabilizes, usually over a few months.
All of this is guaranteed by Saint James with a 10-year retreatment guarantee.
Facts and myths about laser eye surgery
It's understandable if the thought of surgery makes you anxious. Many of our patients come to us with questions and fears, which is completely normal. However, they leave us feeling relieved when they experience how gentle and safe laser eye surgery is.
Is this intervention safe?
Yes. Laser eye surgery is one of the safest eye procedures: it has helped millions of people worldwide, and serious complications are extremely rare.
Will I feel pain?
No. The procedure is performed with local anesthetic eye drops, making the surgery completely painless. At most, you may feel mild discomfort during the first few days of recovery.
Won't my vision deteriorate again?
Laser eye surgery provides permanent results. The distance diopter does not return, regardless of the natural aging processes of the eye (e.g. reading glasses over 45 years of age).
Am I too young or too old for it?
It can be performed on anyone over the age of 18 if the eye condition is adequate.

Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions about laser eye surgery
We have collected the most common questions our patients have about laser eye surgery.
Does laser eye surgery hurt?
No. The procedure is performed with local anesthetic eye drops, so it is completely painless. Mild discomfort or sensitivity to light may occur in the first few days.
How long does it take to heal?
Improvement is felt quickly, but complete stabilization may take from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the treatment chosen.
When can I drive again?
Up to 1-2 days after surgery, with medical approval.
How long do the results last?
Laser eye surgery provides a permanent solution. The diopter does not return, but due to the natural aging of the eye, reading glasses may be necessary after the age of 45.
Will both my eyes be operated on at the same time?
Yes, in most cases, both eyes are operated on at the same time, so recovery is faster and more balanced.
What happens if my eye moves during surgery?
The laser is equipped with an eye tracking system that automatically follows even the smallest movements, so the intervention is always accurate and safe.
Could my vision deteriorate in the future?
No, the results of the treatment are permanent. Subsequent changes in diopters are more likely due to the natural processes of age, rather than a decrease in the effectiveness of the surgery, and almost always only affect near vision.
Maybe I won't be suitable for surgery?
Yes, it can happen. That is why a detailed suitability assessment is necessary. If laser is not suitable, we offer an alternative, such as an ICL or lens surgery.
What side effects may occur?
Temporary dryness, photosensitivity, and mild cloudiness may occur during healing, but these are well-treatable and will gradually disappear.
Why should I choose Saint James Vision and Aesthetics Center?
Thousands of successful procedures, a 10-year re-treatment guarantee, an experienced medical team and a premium, discreet environment ensure that you are in the utmost safety.
