When is a pediatric eye exam recommended?

A pediatric eye examination is not only important when complaints appear. Regular check-ups help to detect hidden problems in time.

We recommend it if:

Most eye exams are recommended from the age of 4, but certain procedures (such as tear duct bypass) can be performed from newborn age.

When is the test not recommended?

Pediatric ophthalmology examinations are safe for all children. The only time it is worth postponing the examination is in the event of an acute eye infection or fever.

Regular check-ups not only serve the child's health, but also give the parent peace of mind: you can be sure that you have done everything for your child's future.

Process

This is how a pediatric eye examination is performed

The examination takes place in a gentle, playful environment so that the child feels safe. Our specialists patiently and clearly explain what is happening, so parents know what to expect at every moment.

The examination is gentle, but for children, every new situation can be a challenge. With a few small preparations, parents can do a lot to ensure that their child arrives at the office calmly and confidently.

Tips for preparation:

  • Talk about it at home: tell them that the test is like an “eye game” where they look at the eyes with lights and images.
  • Bring a favorite toy or book: this can provide a sense of security while waiting.
  • Eating and resting: it is good if the child has rested and eaten before the examination, so that he or she cooperates more easily.
  • Contact lenses: if the child wears contact lenses, it is advisable to remove them 1–2 days before the examination so that the measurements are accurate.

The examination is painless and child-friendly, and the presence of parents ensures a calm environment throughout.

The purpose of the examination is to provide a complete picture of your child's vision and eye health. The process takes place in a friendly atmosphere, where each step is patiently explained to both the child and the parent.

What happens during the examination?

  • Visual acuity measurement: We measure distance and near vision with colorful diagrams and playful tests.
  • Checking eye position: we screen for signs of strabismus and blurred vision.
  • Cornea and fundus examination: with a slit lamp and mydriasis eye drops, if necessary.
  • Tear production and tear duct control: if the complaint is increased tearing or irritation.
  • Medical consultation: We discuss the results and further actions with the parent.

Practical information:

  • The test takes approximately 45–60 minutes.
  • Vision may be blurry for 2-3 hours after mydriasis – do not plan on reading or screen time during this period.
  • A play corner awaits children at the clinic while the pupil dilating drops take effect.

The examination is both thorough and gentle: everything is about the child's safety and peace of mind.

Once the examination is complete, parents will receive detailed information about their child's vision and a written recommendation on what needs to be done. If glasses or further treatment are needed, we will provide precise guidance on the next steps.

What can you expect after the examination?

  • Mydriasis effect: The drops may cause the child's vision to be blurry for 2–3 hours, and sensitivity to light may also occur.
  • Avoid screen time and reading, let the child rest instead.
  • During the dilation period, the child can explore the clinic's play area, so the wait is not boring.
  • A The parent gets a complete picture of whether the child needs glasses or further treatment.

After the examination, you will know exactly how to support your child's vision, and our doctors will inform you of every detail.

Featured treatment

Tear duct syringing in children

A Tear duct syringing in children is a procedure used to check whether the tear drainage system is open and, in some cases, to improve the flow through the tear duct.

Tear duct syringing is often needed for children with persistent watery eyes, sticky discharge or recurring eye infections. During the procedure, the paediatric ophthalmologist uses a sterile fluid to check whether the tear duct is properly open, or whether there is a narrowing or blockage. Blocked tear ducts in childhood can be a common problem, especially in babies, so it is important to identify the exact cause of the symptoms in order to choose the right treatment. Based on the results, the paediatric ophthalmologist will recommend the next steps, which may depend on the child's age and the cause of the symptoms. In the case of persistent watery eyes or recurring discharge, it is worth booking a paediatric eye examination .

Problems with tear duct drainage most often occur in babies and young children . With a congenital blocked tear duct, watery eyes or discharge may appear from birth and in many cases gradually resolve during the first year of life. If symptoms persist after the age of 1or develop later, a paediatric eye examination is recommended. Whether tear duct syringing is needed is always decided by the specialist based on the child's age, symptoms and the condition of the tear duct.
