What do you need to know about laser vision correction treatments?

The need to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses is becoming more and more common. The solution to this problem is refractive, or in everyday language, laser vision correction treatment.

This type of eye surgery has been performed since the 1990s and the procedure has revolutionized vision correction surgeries: since then, nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can be treated safely and effectively. At first, only PRK or surface treatment was available, after which full, i.e. 100% visual acuity does not develop immediately, but after a few weeks, and discomfort can be expected for 1-3 days after the surgery. The more modern version of this procedure is No-touch or Touch-free PRK. The advantage of the latter procedure is that the first step of the surgery, the removal of the outer layer of the skin, is also performed by the laser device, thus resulting in a shorter surgery time and a faster recovery period.
can be counted.

Flap procedures appeared later than surface laser treatment. The official name of this procedure is Femto-Lasik laser.
vision correction treatment, but we can also encounter various fancy names in domestic clinics, where these names are used to try to distinguish between otherwise perfectly identical Femto-Lasik procedures.
Returning to the flap treatment itself, the difference in the procedure compared to the previously mentioned surface treatment is that here the laser treatment takes place in the deeper layer by forming a flap in the cornea and folding it up. Vision clears a few hours after surgery, so this procedure allows us to achieve very quick results, which means that the treated patient can return to work and/or continue their previous normal lifestyle the day after surgery. The flap can be created in several ways: with a so-called microkeratome and with femtosecond laser treatment. The latter method is a safer method, so we only perform this method in our clinic in order to achieve better results.

Refractive surgeries are always performed under local, drop anesthesia and are completely painless. After surgery, you will need to use medicated eye drops for a few weeks and UV-filtering sunglasses for a few months when outdoors, but other than that, you should not expect any other "discomforts."

We recommend it mostly for patients between the ages of 18 and 45, because at this age the eye's ability to adapt is still good, so visual acuity is good up close. Above the age of 45, you should expect a decrease in accommodation ability, meaning that distance vision will be of very good quality thanks to the treatment, but reading glasses may be necessary for near vision (e.g. for reading). If you absolutely want to live a life without glasses, then monovision correction is an option. In this case, only one (dominant) eye is operated on, which will allow the patient to see clearly at a distance. The other (non-dominant) eye will remain myopic, which will allow them to see well up close.

We recommend refractive laser treatment for those who do not want to or cannot wear glasses or contact lenses, play sports, or cannot wear vision correction devices during their work.
